We would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the Club, whose membership consists of business, professional and other interested men and women who, through The Optimist Foundation of Grand Rapids, Michigan Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, wish to promote activities and programs in our community that will benefit and help our youth.
Read through this on-line brochure (page) to find out about the programs, projects and activities of the Optimist Club of Grand Rapids, and how YOU can become a part of them.
Junior Optimist Club As part of an Optimist International program, we annually sponsor a group of 4th – 6th graders at a Grand Rapids area elementary school as a Junior Optimist Club. Through this activity these youngsters are provided opportunities for leadership, friendships, and just plain fun!
Oratorical Contest Held annually in March/April with Optimist International, we have conducted an oratorical contest with youth from Grand Rapids area middle and high schools. This contest has become one of the largest of its kind in both the United States and Canada. One boy and one girl from each District win college scholarships as grand prizes.
High School Sports Awards Each year we honor the high school varsity boy's and girl's basketball teams and golf teams for winning the championship with an awards luncheon and presentation of the Optimist traveling trophies. Over the years, these have become well-known traditions.
Community Service Projects We annually take our turn at bell-ringing for the Salvation Army Tree of Lights campaign. This and other activities provide members with opportunities to serve the local community.
Fund Raising Club members raise monies to support these valuable youth- serving projects through an annual Key Card sale, spring charity event known as the “Friend of Youth” Golf Outing, and other fund raising activities.
Bi-Weekly Club Meetings Held every other Wednesdays with lunch, our meetings are a time of camaraderie with other Optimists, and to learn what is going on in the area through informational programs presented by outside guest speakers.
Special Events Fun and friendships through family picnics, summer golf outings and Christmas dinner party and other ‘special events’ for members and their families.
